Workshop Methodology

Asia e University Kuala Lumpur, MALAYSIA

Koha is a fully web-based open source Integrated Library System (ILS) software, designed and developed by Katipo Communication for the Horowhenua Library Trust, New Zealand in 1999 for management of library and information centers. Koha Free Open Source Software (FOSS) was first deployed in 2000 and continues to evolve and expand to be what it is today. The name comes from a Maori (New Zealand) term meaning a Gift or a Donation. Owing to the fact that it is an open source software, it could be openly acquired and used for free by any interested organisation. Koha has been adopted in Malaysia since 2009 by Asia e University Library. Since then, some small and medium size libraries operating on small budget allocations have opted to adopt Koha to manage their library collection. In 2014, two other large academic libraries such as Hamzah Sendut Library of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) and Universiti Kuala Lumpur (UNIKL) have moved to Koha, reflecting strong confidence in the software.

Koha, both front end (OPAC) and back end (librarian interface) is a web-based technology using Perl as its programming languages. It has a SQL database at the back end. The database contains cataloguing data stored in Machine Readable Catalog (MARC) in XML format - MARCXML and other related records such as acquisition, patrons, and transaction records. Koha uses Zebra indexing engine as index, store and retrieve bibliographic records aimed for faster indexing and retrieval of records. Zebra is an open source indexing engine maintain by Index Data. Koha is equipped with Z39.50 client and server for bibliographic data exchange and Standard Interchange Protocol version 2 (SIP2) intended for automated circulation system.

Libraries adopting FOSS face greater challenges compared to libraries using closed source, proprietary software. One of the challenges faced is supporting and maintaining the system, so that it can operate smoothly and reduce unnecessary risk. Thus, knowledge transfer programme and training is crucial for libraries planning or has already adopted Koha FOSS.
